Data Center Nefeli
“Nefeli”: the G-Cloud Data Center
The newly built G-Cloud Data Center, known generally as Nefeli, meets very exacting, very strict international operating and security standards, in line with the Uptime Institute's Tier III standard. Those standards relate to physical security and access, power supply, air-conditioning, as well as fire protection and suppression.
It is located in a secure, access-controlled area and is over three tiers (in line with the Tier III standard) providing 3 entry checkpoints which each offer different access controls, to confirm access by authorized individuals only, clearly recording login/logout - entry/exit data, plus CCTV monitoring of the site. The Data Center covers 245m2 and has 48 racks which host the hardware required for the G-Cloud IT system.
All E/M infrastructure comes with double power and cooling supplies (in line with the Tier III standard) ensuring 99.982% availability (which translates into less than 1.6 hours of down time a year).
In terms of telecom and network infrastructure, the SYZEFXIS (national public administration) network is used, which for the last 10 years has successfully supported key agencies in Greece’s public administration. Overall bandwidth is currently 1 Gbps (though there is potential to increase this to 10 Gbps). That means the hosted IT systems enjoy very fast interface and data transfer speeds, compared to those currently enjoyed by users of stand-alone Data Centers. By the end of 2018, we plan to install a high availability device via alternatively routed fiber optics.
